WU is currently inviting applications for the position of a full professor[1] of Data-Ecosystems for Environmental Accountability at the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management.

For a period of 5 years, the position is fully funded by the FFG (Austrian Research Promotion Agency), with the support of two sponsoring partners, ÖBB and Verbund. After this initial period, the University will fully fund the position.

The successful candidate is expected to have established an international reputation as a researcher in his/her field and to have outstanding qualifications. Candidates’ qualifications will be assessed in the context of their academic age:

  • A solid academic qualification (e.g. PhD, habilitation) in information systems, computer science or a related area;
  • an outstanding international reputation for high quality scholarship in the area of information systems commensurate with academic age, especially by having demonstrated the ability to publish in top-tier journals of the field;
  • proven expertise in at least one of the following areas: Decentralized Data Processing, Distributed Systems and Cloud Computing; Data Ecosystems for Big Data; Sustainable and Responsible IT; Applications of Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Sustainability; Sustainability Aspects of Artificial Intelligence
  • excellent teaching qualifications at undergraduate and graduate levels as well as in executive education;
  • proven international experience;
  • proven record in attracting research funding;
  • experience in collaborating with industry
  • leadership qualities;
  • gender and diversity management skills

The successful candidate is expected to be active in research on theoretical, formal and applied aspects of Sustainable Data-Ecosystems or Data-Ecosystems for Environmental Sustainability/Accountability. We are open to applications from candidates who work on aspects of these topics from different perspectives and synergistically complement the existing research portfolio at the department in support of our focus on the Digital Economy on the research areas mentioned in the Qualifications section above.

The successful candidate is expected to perform teaching activities at all levels (bachelor’s, master’s, PhD/doctorate, and executive education), both in the classroom and in online-learning formats. Full professors are expected to teach 8 weekly credit hours.

In particular, the new professor shall develop a new elective in the new ‘Digital Economy Master program with a focus on Sustainable Data-Ecosystems and/or Environmental Sustainability and Accountability.[1] In this context, the candidate is also expected to take a coordinating role in the organization of the Master program’s “Research and Industry Labs”, where students work on applied research projects with industry partners from the Master program’s partner network, including the sponsoring partners ÖBB[2] and Verbund[3].

Teaching experience in English is required. Non-German-speaking candidates will be expected to acquire proficiency in German over a certain period of time.

In alignment with the research agenda of the sponsoring partners and FFG, technologies and their applications shall be investigated in the context of use cases around the holistic interplay of transport (logistics), energy and climate data, in order to enable different stakeholders to jointly implement data-driven sustainability.

We also expect the new professor to take an active role in the university’s self-governance and third mission activities.
